Amalgamated Sugar, Syngenta and General Mills Sugar Beet Project
Amalgamated Sugar is committed to sustainably producing sugar and has partnered with General Mills and Syngenta to document ongoing sustainability efforts. Grower-owners of Amalgamated Sugar look to improve soil health, reduce fertilizer inputs, and shrink their environmental footprint. Growers are financially incentivized to better utilize nitrogen, reduce soil loss though harvest activities, and improve product storability. Amalgamated Sugar has a working relationship with Syngenta to collect data regarding crop inputs for reporting into Field to Market.
Objectives
We worked with Syngenta to capture field level data from 11 producers representing 27,000 acres to better understand sustainability outcomes. We met annually to review aggregated reporting, share individual grower reports, hear from expert speakers, engage in small group discussions, etc. We have demonstrated continuous improvement in some indicators but not others, and have added practice based surveys where needed. We have provided thank you gifts for growers and are now engaging with them and supplier partners to chart out plans for 2021 crop and beyond.
